As Jesus walked to his crucifixion, he turned to the weeping women and said: 'Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, weep for yourselves and for your children. For behold, the days are coming when they will say 'blessed are the barren, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never gave milk'. Then they will begin to say to the mountains 'fall on us' and to the hills 'cover us'. For if they do this when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry? Green wood signifies innocence whereas dry wood signifies guilt.
Why did Jesus tell the women to weep for themselves, not for him? Because He was letting the women know that Jerusalem and their sin would be subject to God's judgment, which would be harsh. So His words both warned them - and expressed compassion for - their impending fate. Showing concern for others' suffering, even when He was about to be crucified, demonstrates our Saviour's loving heart and selfless compassion for others. |
